Tucked away in the Norfolk countryside, The Old Stables at Shotesham Park is one of those wedding venues that feels like a bit of a hidden gem.
I’ve been lucky enough to play here a few times now and it’s a venue I always enjoy coming back to. Set within the private, family-run Shotesham Park Estate, it has that feeling of being completely removed from everything else for the day. You arrive along the private drive, surrounded by mature woodland, before discovering the courtyard, gardens and historic buildings beyond.
Once a working stable yard dating back to the 18th century, The Old Stables combines its original character with beautifully renovated, neutral interiors. The Grade II-listed buildings give it a real sense of history without the venue ever feeling overly formal.
For couples looking for a Norfolk wedding venue that feels private, relaxed and full of character, it’s definitely one to have on the list.
The Ceremony
One of the things I really like about The Old Stables is the choice couples have when it comes to their ceremony.
You can choose the elegant Oak Room for an indoor ceremony or make the most of the estate with an outdoor ceremony either in the courtyard or on the grounds at the front of the venue. That flexibility is particularly useful for a Norfolk wedding, where we all know the weather occasionally likes to have its own plans! Both options work beautifully with live music.
For the ceremony, I tend to keep the sax much more understated. This is where personal song choices really come into their own, whether that’s something romantic as guests arrive, a meaningful track for walking down the aisle or something much more upbeat as you leave as a married couple.
It’s also a lovely example of why your ceremony music doesn’t have to follow tradition. Choose songs that actually mean something to you.

Drinks Reception in the Courtyard
This is probably one of my favourite parts of a wedding at Shotesham Park.
Once the ceremony is over, guests can spill out into the courtyard and bar area for drinks and canapés. The courtyard has enough character to feel special without needing to be filled with loads of additional styling. It’s also a brilliant setting for live sax.
For a drinks reception, the music doesn’t need to dominate. I can start with chilled soul, jazz, pop and relaxed summer tracks while everyone catches up, has a drink and explores the venue. Then, depending on the crowd, we can start bringing the energy up.
That’s something I love about playing live rather than simply having a fixed playlist. You can read what’s happening around you. If everyone is chatting and relaxing, the music can sit underneath that. If people suddenly start singing along or dancing, I can take it somewhere completely different.
The Grounds
The Old Stables sits within a mature woodland setting, with fields, landscaped areas and its distinctive circular lawn giving couples plenty of options for photographs throughout the day. It’s another reason the venue feels so private. You’re not surrounded by the outside world; everything feels contained within the estate.
From a wedding photography point of view, you’ve also got a great mixture of settings without needing to travel anywhere else during the day. And when the weather behaves, having guests outside with a drink, live music playing and the Norfolk countryside surrounding you is pretty hard to beat.
The Wedding Breakfast
From the courtyard, the day moves inside for the wedding breakfast. And the wedding breakfast is another part of the day where live sax can be great fun.
Some couples want relaxed background music while everyone eats. Others want their entrance into the room to be a proper moment before gradually turning the wedding breakfast into something much livelier. I’ve played enough weddings now to know that guests dancing between courses is definitely not reserved for the evening party!
It’s all about working out what atmosphere you want and using the music to help the day build naturally.
A Venue That Feels Exclusive
As mentioned before, something that really stands out at Shotesham Park is the privacy. Couples have exclusive use of The Old Stables, and that makes a big difference to the atmosphere. You’re not sharing the venue with another wedding or constantly seeing members of the public passing through.
Instead, your guests can properly settle into the space. The day can move naturally between the spaces, and each area feels like another part of the same celebration rather than a completely separate venue. For me, that flow is one of the things that can make a wedding feel really relaxed.
Getting Ready at Shotesham Park
The experience can begin at the venue before guests have even arrived.
The Meadow bedroom suite and dedicated preparation suite give couples space to get ready on site before the ceremony.
Having those different parts of the day in one location can take away a lot of unnecessary rushing around. You’re already where you need to be, which means you can concentrate on enjoying the build-up rather than thinking about getting from one place to another.
It’s one of those practical details that might not sound like the most exciting part of choosing a wedding venue, but on the day it can make a huge difference.
The Team Behind the Day
A beautiful venue is one thing, but the people running it matter just as much. The Old Stables has its own experienced wedding team, with a dedicated coordinator on site for the wedding day.
As a supplier, good communication behind the scenes makes such a difference. When the venue team, photographer, videographer, musicians, DJ, caterers and everyone else know what’s happening and when, the couple shouldn’t have to worry about any of it.
That’s ultimately what you want, All of the organisation happening quietly in the background while you’re getting on with enjoying your wedding.
The Evening Party
Once dinner and speeches are finished, The Old Stables can move from relaxed countryside wedding into full evening celebration.
This is where the soundtrack can completely change. The chilled sax from earlier in the afternoon can make way for disco, funk, pop, Ibiza classics, house and the songs that get your particular group of friends and family onto the dancefloor.
A Sax/DJ combination works particularly well for this because you keep the continuous flow of the DJ while adding live sax over those bigger moments. Would highly recommend EA DJ’s or Epic Events who I’ve had the pleasure of working with here.
And after a day that has gradually built from ceremony to drinks, dinner and speeches, I always think the evening should feel like a natural progression rather than starting the atmosphere again from scratch.
Why I Love Playing at The Old Stables
Having performed at The Old Stables a few times now, what I particularly like is how many different atmospheres you can create within one venue. You can have something genuinely intimate for the ceremony, chilled live music in the courtyard, a relaxed wedding breakfast and then a completely different energy once the party starts.
It doesn’t feel like a venue trying to be something it’s not, either.
The historic buildings, woodland and Norfolk countryside already give The Old Stables plenty of personality. You can add your own styling, flowers, music and personal touches without needing to completely transform the place.
For me, that’s often what makes the best wedding venues work.
