You walk down the aisle a certain way. You have speeches after dinner. You cut a cake. You have a first dance. The evening party starts afterwards. Somewhere along the way, somebody will probably tell you that something is “just what you do at a wedding”.

But does it have to be?

Having played at weddings across the UK, some of my favourite days have been the ones where couples have taken the traditional wedding format and changed it to suit them.

That doesn’t mean wedding traditions are bad. Far from it. If you’ve always imagined being walked down the aisle by your dad, cutting a huge wedding cake or having your first dance with everyone watching, do it.

The point is that a tradition should be there because you want it, not because you feel obliged to include it.

Here are some of the wedding traditions I’ve seen couples change, skip or completely reinvent and why they worked so well.

Not Waiting Until the Evening to Start the Party

This is probably one of the biggest changes I’ve noticed.

Traditionally, the wedding day gradually works towards the evening reception. Ceremony first, followed by drinks, photographs, wedding breakfast, speeches, first dance and then finally, the party.

But why does everyone have to wait until 8pm to start having fun?

I’ve played wedding breakfasts where guests have been dancing between courses. I’ve played Jubel as couples make a huge entrance into dinner. I’ve seen drinks receptions gradually turn into mini parties because everyone was enjoying themselves and nobody wanted to stop it.

And it works.

You don’t need to make every second of your wedding high-energy, but if your guests are already dancing at 4pm, there’s no rule saying you need to tell them to sit down because the “party” hasn’t technically started yet.

Some of the best weddings allow the atmosphere to build naturally.

Have a Last Dance Instead of a First Dance

Don’t fancy a first dance? Have a last dance instead.

I really like this alternative because it completely changes what the moment is about.

Rather than standing in the middle of a room at the beginning of the evening with everyone watching, wait until the very end of the night. Once your guests have left the dancefloor, take a few minutes together and have one final song.

After a full day of people, photographs, conversations, food, speeches and dancing, suddenly it’s just the two of you.

Your photographer or videographer can capture it from a distance, or it can be something completely private.

And if the thought of performing a rehearsed first dance fills you with dread, this can feel far more natural.

Your first dance doesn’t actually have to be your first dance.

Walking Down the Aisle Your Way

There’s no requirement that one person has to walk down the aisle accompanied by their father.

I’ve seen couples arrive together, brides walk with both parents, people walk with siblings or other important family members, and couples simply choose the entrance that makes the most sense to them.

Alternative aisle arrangements are increasingly common suggestions for couples who want the ceremony to better reflect their relationships and circumstances.

The same applies to the music.

Your aisle song does not have to sound like a traditional wedding song.

If there’s a Taylor Swift song that means everything to you, use it. If you want something from a film soundtrack, use that. If you want live sax playing a completely unexpected song that has a story behind it, even better.

I’ve always thought ceremony music works best when guests hear it and immediately understand why that couple chose it.

See Each Other Before the Ceremony

The traditional big reveal happens at the aisle.

For some couples, that moment is incredibly important and they wouldn’t change it for anything.

Others are choosing a first look.

That gives you a private moment together before the ceremony begins, potentially settles some nerves and can also create more flexibility for photographs and the rest of the day’s schedule. First looks are one of the most commonly suggested ways to rethink the traditional wedding timeline.

What I like about this is that it highlights something couples sometimes forget during wedding planning: you’re allowed to spend time together on your wedding day.

It sounds obvious, but once suppliers, guests, photographs and formalities get involved, the day can disappear remarkably quickly.

Make the Wedding Breakfast an Event

I LOVE this one.

The traditional wedding breakfast can sometimes become a fairly long period of sitting down, eating several courses and waiting for speeches.

It doesn’t have to.

I’ve played weddings where the couple makes a huge entrance into the room with live sax. I’ve played between courses and watched guests get out of their seats, start singing and eventually end up dancing around the tables.

That changes the whole atmosphere.

If you’re a couple who loves a party, you don’t necessarily need three hours of formality before you’re allowed to show that side of yourselves.

Equally, if you want a beautiful, quiet meal with background jazz, that’s completely valid too.

The important thing is deciding what you actually want your wedding breakfast to feel like, rather than simply deciding what you’re serving.

Cut the Cake During the Drinks Reception

Who decided the cake needs to be cut in the evening?

Traditionally, the cake cut tends to appear somewhere around the end of the wedding breakfast or before the first dance. But I’ve seen couples bring it forward and make it part of the drinks reception instead.

And it makes a lot of sense.

Everyone is already together, your photographer and videographer are there capturing the afternoon, and it gives you another little moment during the drinks reception without interrupting the evening party later. Also a LOT of people forget about the cake later on, everyone is already quite peckish after the ceremony. 😉

You can put some music behind it, gather everyone around, cut the cake and then carry on enjoying the afternoon.

It also means that once the evening dancefloor gets going, you don’t have to stop it again for another formality.

Have No Speeches — Or Keep Them Short

Wedding speeches can be one of the best parts of the day. They can also become one of the longest.

There’s no rule saying you need three or four traditional speeches, and there definitely isn’t a minimum running time.

I’ve seen couples have just one or two short speeches, open the microphone to different family members, move them to another part of the day or decide not to have them at all.

If speeches matter to you, absolutely keep them. But asking everyone to keep things concise can work brilliantly. You still get the stories, laughs and emotional moments without guests beginning to wonder when dinner is coming or when the bar reopens.

It can also help the energy of the day. If you’ve just had a lively wedding breakfast with everyone singing and dancing, a very long block of speeches can completely change the atmosphere.

Five brilliant minutes will nearly always be remembered more fondly than twenty-five minutes that should have been five.

Mix Up Your Bridal Party

Your bridal party doesn’t need to fit neatly into traditional roles.

You don’t need matching numbers on either side. Your closest friends don’t need to be divided according to gender. And you don’t need to give someone a particular title simply because that’s how wedding parties have traditionally worked.

Choose the people you actually want around you.

I’ve seen mixed bridal parties, uneven groups, different outfits and couples who have completely done away with the conventional bridesmaid/groomsman divide.

The photographs still look brilliant. The ceremony still works. And, most importantly, you’re surrounded by the people who matter to you.

Although having now witnessed enough wedding dancefloors, I would add one selection criterion:

Choose people who are prepared to bring some energy when the chorus hits.

Your Ring Bearer Doesn’t Have to Be the Best Man

The rings are one of the most important parts of the ceremony, but that doesn’t mean they automatically need to spend the morning in the best man’s pocket.

This is such an easy tradition to have some fun with.

Give the job to a grandparent. Ask a younger member of the family. Have your dog bring them down the aisle if the venue allows it. Or turn the whole thing into a surprise.

One idea I particularly love is hiding the rings underneath one of the guests’ seats.

When the celebrant asks for the rings, everyone checks underneath their chair and one unsuspecting guest discovers they’ve been the ring bearer all along.

It’s a tiny change to the ceremony, but it’s personal, gets everyone involved and creates a moment people aren’t expecting.

Not every unique wedding idea needs to cost money or involve months of planning.

Sometimes you just need a bit of double-sided tape.

Have a Dress Change

One wedding outfit? Also not a rule.

Dress changes have become increasingly popular, and they can make sense for reasons beyond simply having another outfit.

A formal wedding dress might be perfect for the ceremony and photographs but considerably less practical when you’re trying to dance later in the evening.

Changing into something shorter, lighter or completely different can almost mark the beginning of the party.

I’ve also seen couples make the reveal itself part of the evening. Rather than quietly disappearing and returning twenty minutes later, choose a track, make another entrance and turn it into a moment.

If you’ve spent the afternoon looking elegant and sophisticated and want to reappear ready for Freed From Desire and a packed dancefloor, why not?

It’s another example of adapting the traditional wedding format around how you actually want to experience the day.

Not Disappearing for Hours of Photographs

Of course you want brilliant photographs from your wedding.

But something I’ve become increasingly aware of from working alongside brilliant photographers is how good the best ones are at capturing the day without making the couple feel absent from it.

Your drinks reception is happening once.

Your friends are together. Your family are there. The drinks are flowing. The music is playing.

You should get to experience it too.

You don’t necessarily need to spend the entire drinks reception working through an enormous list of formal photographs. Talk to your photographer about what really matters to you and build enough space into the timeline to actually enjoy the celebration you’ve spent months or years organising.

Forget the ‘Obvious’ Wedding Playlist

You knew music was going to appear again.

There are certain songs that seem to have become unofficial requirements at British weddings.

And no, I’m not going to start another Mr Brightside rant here.

Your final song doesn’t have to be Sweet Caroline. Your dancefloor doesn’t require Mr Brightside. You don’t need a prescribed collection of “wedding songs” if none of them represents you.

Play the music your crowd loves.

I’ve performed weddings where the soundtrack jumps from Ibiza house to ABBA, Busted, old-school R&B, disco, Taylor Swift, Oasis and musical theatre.

On paper, it might look completely chaotic.

In the room, it makes perfect sense because it reflects the people who are actually there.

A great wedding playlist isn’t about proving you have impeccable music taste.

It’s about creating a room full of people who don’t want to stop dancing.

Skip Traditions You Simply Don’t Want

Sometimes the tradition couples break is simply deciding they don’t need to replace it with anything.

No bouquet toss.

No receiving line.

No formal cake cutting.

No first dance.

No huge wedding party introduction.

And nothing terrible happens.

In fact, several of these are among the traditions wedding professionals regularly suggest couples reconsider when they don’t add anything meaningful to the day.

This is probably the most important point.

You don’t have to find an alternative for everything you remove.

If you don’t want it, you can simply… not do it.

The Best Weddings Feel Like the Couple

After seeing so many different approaches to weddings, I don’t think there’s a perfect format.

I’ve worked at very traditional weddings that have been incredible. I’ve worked at weddings where the usual timeline has almost completely disappeared and they’ve been incredible too.

What they tend to have in common is that the decisions make sense for the couple.

That’s what guests notice.

They remember the unexpected song during the ceremony. They remember everyone suddenly dancing during dinner. They remember the ridiculous entrance into the wedding breakfast. They remember the speech nobody knew was coming.

Those things have personality.

So take inspiration from Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok, wedding blogs and other people’s celebrations. Keep every tradition you genuinely love.

But don’t be afraid to ask:

Do we actually want this, or are we only doing it because it’s what weddings are supposed to have?

Your wedding doesn’t need to follow the crowd to be memorable.

It needs to feel like yours.
