Some wedding venues are a little further from home than others… and Sant Ffraed House is definitely one of them for me!
But having now made the journey over to Monmouthshire for a few weddings here, it’s also become a venue that I’m always very happy to see appear in the diary.
Set within 14 acres in the Usk Valley, Sant Ffraed House is a Grade II-listed country estate that combines the character of the original house with some seriously impressive contemporary spaces.
It feels grand from the moment you arrive, but what I particularly like as a wedding performer is how the venue changes throughout the day. You can move from an elegant ceremony to relaxed drinks overlooking the grounds, into the incredible K Room for the wedding breakfast and then completely transform the atmosphere again for the evening party.
And that gives us plenty of opportunities for live music along the way.
The Ceremony
Sant Ffraed House gives couples the option of holding their ceremony indoors in its dedicated ceremony suite or making the most of the setting with an outdoor ceremony on the terrace.
For me, ceremony sax is all about understanding that this is a very different part of the wedding from what might come later.
As guests arrive, the music can be understated and relaxed, before becoming much more personal for those important moments such as walking down the aisle, signing the register and leaving the ceremony as a married couple.
And those choices don’t necessarily need to be traditional.
I’ve played everything from classic love songs to Disney, modern pop and completely unexpected requests at wedding ceremonies. If a particular song means something to you, that’s usually far more important than whether it sounds like a conventional “wedding song”.
Drinks at Sant Ffraed House
Once the ceremony is finished, the day can move into drinks and that lovely period where everyone can properly relax.
Sant Ffraed House has some beautiful spaces for this, with the main house, lounges, terrace and views across the surrounding countryside giving guests plenty to enjoy before the wedding breakfast.
This is also one of my favourite parts of a wedding to play.
Live sax during the drinks reception can be whatever you want it to be. Some couples want chilled soul, jazz and relaxed pop sitting underneath the conversation, while others want the party to start almost immediately.
I tend to let the atmosphere build naturally.
We can begin with something laid-back while everyone grabs a drink and catches up, then gradually introduce more recognisable tracks as the afternoon develops.
The K Room
And then there’s the K Room.
This is probably one of the features that makes Sant Ffraed House particularly memorable.
Set on a terrace overlooking the lake, with views towards Sugarloaf Mountain, the K Room is the venue’s main reception space and creates a real sense of arrival when everyone heads in for the wedding breakfast.
It’s contemporary, dramatic and completely different in character from the historic main house.
That contrast works brilliantly across a wedding day. It also gives couples the opportunity to make their wedding breakfast entrance into a proper moment.
Rather than simply walking into the room while everyone applauds, choose a song you absolutely love, turn the energy up and let your guests welcome you in properly.
The party doesn’t necessarily need to wait until after dinner.

The Wedding Breakfast
Once everyone is inside the K Room, live music can continue through the wedding breakfast too.
Again, there isn’t one correct way to do this.
Some couples want the sax to return to the background while everyone eats. Others want singalong classics between courses and guests out of their seats long before dessert arrives. I’ve played enough weddings now to know that sometimes the wedding breakfast ends up becoming one of the most unexpectedly fun parts of the day.

From Daytime Elegance to Evening Party
One of Sant Ffraed House’s biggest strengths is how easily the atmosphere can change once the evening begins.
The same K Room that hosted your wedding breakfast can transform as the lights go down and the music goes up.
And this is where the sax can change completely too.
The romantic songs and chilled background music from earlier in the day can disappear in favour of house, Ibiza, disco, funk, R&B, pop and whatever songs get your particular group of friends and family onto the dancefloor.
Playing alongside a DJ means I can get away from the stage and right into the middle of the party.
And yes, depending on how the evening develops, there’s every possibility the sparkly jacket will make an appearance.
Staying at Sant Ffraed House
Another advantage of Sant Ffraed House is that the celebration doesn’t necessarily finish when the last song does.
The main house has 13 bedrooms, including a dedicated honeymoon wing, while additional accommodation is available across the converted stables and mews rooms. There’s also The Lodge for groups and families, while Jenny’s provides a separate pre-wedding space with its own salon and dining area.
Having accommodation as part of the venue can make a big difference to the flow of a wedding, particularly when you’ve got friends and family travelling to celebrate with you.
And when everyone has spent the evening on the dancefloor, not having very far to travel afterwards is never a bad thing!
Why I Love Playing at Sant Ffraed House
I’ve been lucky enough to make the journey to Sant Ffraed House for a few weddings now. I’ll admit, it’s certainly not the closest venue to me! But it’s absolutely worth the miles.
What I particularly enjoy is the variety you get throughout the day. The historic house, terrace, surrounding countryside and contemporary K Room all have their own identity, which means each part of the wedding can feel different without guests having to travel between venues.
From a live music perspective, that’s ideal. I can be playing something completely understated earlier in the afternoon and then, a few hours later, be right in the middle of a packed dancefloor playing something that couldn’t be further from it.
Why Sant Ffraed House Works So Well for Weddings
There are plenty of reasons Sant Ffraed House stands out as a Monmouthshire wedding venue:
- A Grade II-listed country estate set within 14 acres
- Beautiful views across the Usk Valley
- Indoor and outdoor ceremony options
- Stylish spaces for post-ceremony drinks
- The spectacular K Room for the wedding breakfast and evening celebration
- Views across the lake towards Sugarloaf Mountain
- On-site accommodation within the main house
- Additional accommodation across the stables, mews and The Lodge
- Dedicated pre-wedding facilities at Jenny’s
- Plenty of opportunities to incorporate live music throughout the day
But for me, one of its biggest strengths is the way the venue allows the atmosphere to evolve.
Sant Ffraed House might involve a few more miles in the car for me, but having played here several times now, it’s a journey I’m always happy to make.
It’s a venue that manages to combine the grandeur of a country house with a genuinely impressive modern wedding space, beautiful Welsh surroundings and plenty of opportunities to make each stage of your day your own.
