There’s something pretty special about an autumn wedding.
The colours start changing, evenings get darker, candles suddenly make sense again and there’s absolutely no requirement to spend the six months before your wedding worrying about whether it’ll be 30°C outside.
And while summer weddings will always be popular, autumn gives you the opportunity to create a completely different atmosphere.
If you’re planning a wedding in September, October or November, here are seven autumn wedding ideas to make the most of the season.
Embrace Autumn Colours – Without Everything Being Orange
When you think of an autumn wedding, your mind probably immediately goes to orange.
And yes, burnt orange, terracotta and rust can look brilliant, but you don’t need to turn your venue into a pumpkin patch to make the most of the season.
Deep burgundy, forest green, plum, gold, chocolate brown and softer neutral tones can all create an autumnal feel.
You can bring those colours into your flowers, bridesmaid dresses, stationery, table styling and even smaller details like napkins and ribbons. Or just let nature do some of the work.
If you’ve chosen a countryside venue surrounded by trees, the changing leaves can become part of the backdrop without you adding anything at all.
Autumn doesn’t have to be a theme. It can simply influence the atmosphere.
Make the Most of Golden Hour
One of the best things about an autumn wedding has to be the photographs. Low, warm sunlight combined with autumn colours can create some incredible opportunities for your photographer.
But there’s one important thing to remember: The sun sets earlier.
If getting those golden-hour photographs is important to you, speak to your photographer when you’re putting together the timings for the day rather than discovering during the wedding breakfast that you’ve missed it.
You also don’t necessarily need to disappear for an hour.
Ten or fifteen minutes away from your guests when the light is at its best can be enough to capture some brilliant shots before getting straight back to the party.
Lean Into Candlelight
This is where autumn weddings really come into their own. As the light starts disappearing outside, candles, fairy lights and warm lighting can completely change a room.
It can make a large venue feel intimate and creates a natural transition between the daytime celebration and the evening party.
Just check what your venue allows before ordering 400 candles… Some venues understandably have restrictions on naked flames, but LED candles and clever lighting can still create a similar effect.
Give Your Guests Something Warm
An autumn wedding gives you some brilliant food and drink options that might feel slightly strange in the middle of July.
Hot chocolate stations, warm apple drinks, coffee bars, seasonal cocktails or late-night comfort food can all work brilliantly. And if you’re planning outdoor drinks, blankets are a simple touch that guests will genuinely appreciate as the temperature drops.
You could even swap the traditional late-night food for something properly comforting.
Pizza, toasties, loaded fries, pies…
After several hours on the dancefloor, nobody is going to complain.
Don’t Assume Everything Has to Happen Indoors
Autumn in the UK doesn’t automatically mean rain.
You could still have a beautiful outdoor ceremony, drinks reception on the terrace or spend part of the afternoon outside.
The trick is simply having a good Plan B.
If you’re choosing an autumn wedding venue, I’d look at the indoor spaces just as carefully as the outdoor ones. If the weather changes at the last minute, you want the alternative to feel like another great option rather than somewhere you’ve reluctantly been moved to.
And if the weather behaves? Make the most of it. Grab a drink, get everyone outside and enjoy those autumn surroundings.
Let the Music Change With the Day
This is something I talk about a lot because your wedding doesn’t need one musical atmosphere from beginning to end.
An autumn wedding can start beautifully. Imagine arriving at your venue with relaxed live music playing as everyone takes their seats. After the ceremony, the sax can move into soul, jazz and chilled pop while everyone has a drink.
Then the light starts disappearing.
Dinner finishes. The lights go down.
And suddenly we’re a VERY long way from chilled background music.
That’s when the disco, funk, house, Ibiza, R&B and party tracks can come out. One of my favourite things about playing weddings is being able to create both ends of that spectrum on the same day.
Beautiful background music at 3pm. Sax on the dancefloor at 9pm.
Same wedding. Completely different atmosphere.
Have a Sparkler Moment – But Think About the Timing
One advantage of the darker evenings?
You don’t need to wait until midnight for sparklers to actually look good.
A sparkler moment can create some brilliant photographs and gets everybody outside together for ten minutes before heading straight back onto the dancefloor.
But organisation is everything. Speak to your photographer and venue beforehand, have someone responsible for getting everybody into position and make sure there are safe ways to light and dispose of them.
You also don’t necessarily need to use them as your grand exit. Doing sparklers earlier in the evening means you can get the photos and then carry on partying afterwards, which sounds much better to me.
Autumn Weddings Are All About Atmosphere
The thing I love about autumn weddings is that you don’t need to fill your day with leaves and pumpkins for it to feel seasonal.
It’s often the smaller things that do it. The changing colours outside. The lower sunlight. Candles appearing as it gets dark. Something warm to drink. Everyone moving inside as the evening begins.
And then a packed dancefloor while it’s dark and cold outside.
Rather than trying to make every element fit an “autumn wedding theme”, think about how you want your guests to feel throughout the day.
Cosy and relaxed?
Elegant and romantic?
Or are we using the earlier sunset as an excuse to get the party started sooner?
All three sound pretty good to me.
