When people see me playing sax at a wedding, they see the sparkle, the dancing and the fun. But behind every performance is a whole lot of planning, prep and detail that makes those moments happen seamlessly.

Here’s a peek behind the scenes at how I prep for a wedding or event, from creating the perfect playlist to making sure I’m in the right place at the right time (and looking the part, of course):

Travel & Logistics: Getting the Sax to the Right Place

No two weddings are the same. One weekend I might be playing at a local barn, the next I’m off to Scotland! I always check routes ahead of time, plan for traffic and make sure all my gear is ready to go (sax, stand, speaker, cables, the lot).
If the journey’s long, I’ll often stay nearby the night before so I can arrive fresh and focused. I always have my favourite service stations en route too (Big up South Mimms!)

Building the Perfect Wedding Playlist

Every couple’s soundtrack is unique and one of my favourite parts of the job is curating playlists that fit the day perfectly. Whether it’s a soulful set for your drinks reception or Ibiza vibes for the evening, I work closely with each couple to get the balance right.
Once the day arrives, I keep an eye on the atmosphere. If guests are dancing, I’ll keep that energy going. If it’s a relaxed golden hour moment, I’ll ease into something smoother. It’s all about reading the room and making the day flow.

The Outfit (and Yes, the Sparkly Jacket)

If you’ve seen me perform, you’ll know the sparkly jacket is practically a character of its own. It’s actually now become a bit of a signature couples often request it specifically!
It might not be the coolest choice temperature wise, but it brings instant joy and a touch of fun to the dancefloor. Because weddings are celebrations and who doesn’t love a bit of sparkle?

Venue Prep: Setting the Scene

Before the day arrives, I’ll check in with the wedding coordinator and talk through any setup points, sound levels and the best spots. Every space sounds different, so this is key to making sure the sax sounds great whether I’m playing in a grand hall, marquee or garden patio.
This prep also helps coordinate smooth transitions so the moment you walk back up the aisle or hit the dancefloor, the music is ready to roll.

Collaborating with Other Wedding Suppliers

Behind every great wedding is a dream team of suppliers. DJs, photographers, planners, caterers, venue staff and I love working alongside them.
Good communication keeps the day running seamlessly. Plus, it’s always brilliant catching up with other creatives who share the same goal, making your day unforgettable.

Showtime!

Once all the prep’s done, it’s time for the magic. The first note, the first smile from a guest, the first person to start dancing, that’s when all the hard work pays off.
Every wedding has its own rhythm and energy and no two performances are ever the same. That’s what makes it so special.

Wrapping Up

At the end of the night, the jacket might be a bit hot, the reed might need replacing but the buzz never fades. Every wedding I play is a privilege, a chance to add music and memories to one of the most important days of someone’s life.
