Dreaming of a sunny wedding? Just be careful what you wish for because when that wedding heatwave hits, it’s no joke! With British summers becoming hotter (and stickier!) each year, it’s worth being prepared in case your big day turns out to be a scorcher.
I’ve played at a lot of sunny weddings, and while a golden glow can make everything feel dreamy, the heat can also catch people off guard. So, whether you’re a bride, groom or guest, here are a few tips to help you keep cool and fully enjoy every moment of your celebration.
If you’re planning an outdoor ceremony or drinks reception, make sure there’s plenty of shade. Parasols, gazebos, trees or even pretty fabric draping can make a huge difference. Not only will your guests thank you, but your photos will too. Squinting into the sun is never a good look!
Pimms and Prosecco is all well and good for a sunny day, but don’t forget the water! A self serve station with jugs of fruit infused water or canned sparkling drinks works wonders and keeps energy levels high. Bonus points for anything with ice!
Lightweight, natural fabrics are the way to go and that goes for the couple and the guests. If you’re planning a tuxedo or full-length gown, think about adding a cooler second look for later on, or at least building in breaks to escape the heat. So many bridges now have a second dress for the evening which might be something to consider.
Music plays a big part in setting the tone, especially in the heat. During drinks or cocktail hour, I tend to go for laid back, summery sets. Think Stevie Wonder, Fleetwood Mac, Taylor Swift’s acoustic moments, keeping the vibe uplifting without draining the energy.
That golden hour light is your best friend, but midday sun can be super harsh. Work with your photographer to plan your couples’ portraits for later in the day when the light is softer and the air’s a bit cooler. You’ll look and feel better for it.
Consider shifting your party slightly later. A sunset dinner, twilight speeches or even your first dance as the stars come out. Whilst it being romantic, it makes the most of the cooler evening air and if your wedding entertainment is inside then it’s nice to start that as the sun sets so people don’t overheat whilst dancing.
A heatwave wedding doesn’t have to be stressful, with a bit of planning and a lot of water (and maybe a handheld fan or two), it can be one of the most beautiful ways to celebrate.
Planning a summer wedding? I’d love to be part of it. Whether it’s romantic ceremony music, upbeat drinks reception vibes or a full on sax & DJ party set, I can help set the perfect mood, heatwave or not!
